The healing timeline, session by session
Day 1
Redness resembling mild sunburn. Most work from home comfortably.
Day 2
Redness fading. Mineral makeup is generally comfortable.
Days 3-5
Some dryness or light flaking as the skin resurfaces.
Week 2
Texture and glow start to visibly change.
Weeks 8-12
Collagen remodeling from that session completes.
Why the skin reacts this way
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a sterile cartridge of fine needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. That controlled injury is the entire point – it triggers a genuine healing response, and new collagen and elastin are what that response produces. The redness and short recovery window are not a side effect to tolerate; they are the visible part of the process actually working.
The day-by-day recovery
| When | What’s happening |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Redness similar to mild sunburn. Skin may feel warm or tight. |
| Day 2 | Redness noticeably calmer. Mineral makeup is generally fine at this point. |
| Days 3-5 | Some dryness or light flaking as the outer skin resurfaces – this is normal, not a complication. |
| Week 2 | Texture and glow start to visibly improve. |
| Weeks 8-12 | Collagen remodeling from that individual session continues and completes. |
That last row is the one worth sitting with: the honest point to judge a result is at the end of a full course of sessions, not after the first one. Most people need 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Acne scarring often needs 4 to 6, and body areas such as stretch marks typically need more.
Does it actually hurt?
Topical numbing is applied for 20 to 30 minutes before treatment, and most people describe the sensation afterward as a light, sandpapery vibration – more noticeable on the forehead and around the nose, where skin sits close to bone.
What to do and skip in the first 24-48 hours
Do this
- Keep skin clean with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
- Apply a bland moisturizer as needed
- Use mineral sunscreen once you’re back to normal activity
- Let flaking skin come off on its own
Skip this
- Makeup for the first 24 hours
- Direct sun exposure while skin is healing
- Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs and other actives until fully recovered
- Picking or peeling at any flaking skin
- Sweating heavily – exercise, saunas – for 24 hours
Sun protection matters more than usual right now
Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage than usual while it resurfaces. Mineral sunscreen, reapplied consistently, is worth being strict about for the week following treatment – not just the general daily habit you’d otherwise practice.
Combining with other treatments
If you also get Botox or filler, these are usually not scheduled on the same day. Microneedling is normally booked about 2 weeks after injectables, so any swelling has resolved and each treatment can be assessed on its own. Full detail on that spacing is in Microneedling After Botox.
Who shouldn’t get microneedling right now
- Active inflammatory or cystic acne in the treatment area
- Within 6 months of isotretinoin
- A history of keloid scarring
- Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- An active infection or cold sore in the area to be treated
These are screened for before treatment, but worth knowing going in if any apply to you.
Questions people ask
How long is the downtime after microneedling?
24 to 48 hours of redness similar to mild sunburn. Many people are comfortable in mineral makeup by day 2, with some light flaking on days 3 to 5.
When will I see results?
Texture and glow start changing around week 2. Full collagen remodeling from each session continues for 8 to 12 weeks, so the honest assessment point is at the end of your full course rather than after one visit.
Can I wear makeup after microneedling?
Skip it for the first 24 hours. Mineral makeup is generally comfortable by day 2.
How many sessions do I actually need?
Most people need 3 to 4, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Acne scarring often needs 4 to 6, and body areas like stretch marks typically need more.
Does microneedling hurt?
Not much, thanks to topical numbing applied beforehand. Most people describe a light, sandpapery vibration, more noticeable on the forehead and around the nose.
Can I exercise after microneedling?
Wait 24 hours. Heavy sweating on freshly treated skin isn’t ideal while it’s healing.
When can I use retinol or other actives again?
Wait until your skin has fully recovered from the flaking stage, typically around day 5 to a week, before resuming actives.
