Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a synthetic version of a molecule your body already produces to break down dietary fat. Injected into the pocket of fat beneath the chin, it disrupts the membrane of the fat cells there. Those cells are cleared by the body over the following weeks, and because adult fat cells do not regenerate, the reduction is permanent.
It has been FDA-approved for submental fullness since 2015 and is the only injectable with that approval. A course is typically two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with up to fifty small injections placed across a marked grid each time.

How to prep & how to plan your week
Plan the week around your visit
- Book for a Thursday or Friday if you can. Days one to three are the most swollen, and most patients prefer to be at home.
- Allow at least six weeks before an event. Each session has its own week of swelling, and results take four to six weeks to appear.
- If medically appropriate and cleared by your physician, stop blood thinners, NSAIDs, fish oil and vitamin E for 48 hours.
- Tell us about any difficulty swallowing, previous neck surgery or bleeding disorder.
- Have ice packs, soft scarves and acetaminophen at home before your visit.
- Reschedule if you have an active infection in the area.
- If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, please let us know; we'll plan Kybella for afterward.
The first five days
- Ice for 10 to 15 minutes at a time for the first 48 hours. It helps noticeably with both swelling and comfort.
- Sleep with your head elevated on two pillows for the first three nights.
- Expect pronounced swelling on days one to three. The area may look fuller than before treatment for a few days. This is normal and a sign the treatment is working.
- Acetaminophen is fine for discomfort. Avoid NSAIDs for the first 48 hours if your physician agrees.
- No strenuous exercise for 48 hours; nothing that raises blood pressure or body heat.
- Numbness and firmness under the chin are common and can last several weeks. Both resolve on their own.
- A chin strap or compression garment is optional but many patients find it comfortable for the first few nights.
- Call us for difficulty swallowing that does not settle, an asymmetric smile, spreading redness, heat or an open wound in the area.

Safety
What are the side effects of Kybella?+
Swelling, bruising, numbness, firmness and tenderness in the treated area are all expected. Numbness can last several weeks. Less commonly, temporary weakness of the lower lip from marginal mandibular nerve irritation causes an uneven smile, which resolves on its own. Difficulty swallowing is possible and usually mild and brief.
Who should not have Kybella?+
Kybella isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection in the treatment area, with a bleeding disorder or anticoagulants without physician clearance, or with a history of difficulty swallowing. When fullness is mostly loose skin rather than fat, another treatment will suit you better.
Is Kybella better than liposuction?+
Each has its place. Surgery removes more fat in a single procedure and can address skin at the same time, with anesthetic and a longer recovery. Kybella is non-surgical with no incision, and is planned as a course of sessions focused on fat. If surgery would suit your goals better, we'll gladly refer you.
