What PRF is

Your own biology,
concentrated

Platelet-rich fibrin is made from a small sample of your own blood. We draw it much like routine bloodwork, spin it gently in a centrifuge for around ten minutes, and separate the layer rich in platelets, white blood cells and fibrin. That layer is then placed back into the area being treated.

Platelets are the body's natural repair signal. Concentrated and placed where you'd like regeneration to happen, they recruit the cells that build collagen, improve microcirculation and, in the scalp, extend the growth phase of the hair follicle.

What sets PRF apart from PRP is the spin. PRP is centrifuged quickly with an anticoagulant added, creating a liquid that releases its growth factors within about a day. PRF is spun slowly in a plain tube with nothing added, which allows fibrin to form a natural mesh. That mesh holds the platelets in place, releases growth factors gradually over seven to ten days, and retains the stem cells that a faster spin separates out.

From blood draw

Everything happens in a single appointment, and most of it takes place while your numbing cream works.

A small draw

Much like routine bloodwork, and over in under a minute. The amount depends on the area: under-eyes need considerably less than a full scalp.

A gentle spin, nothing added

Around ten minutes in the centrifuge at low speed, with no anticoagulant. This gentle spin is what distinguishes PRF from PRP, and it's what allows the fibrin to form.

A fibrin scaffold forms

Fibrin creates a natural mesh that holds platelets, white blood cells and stem cells. With nothing added to prevent clotting, your body's own healing architecture assembles in the tube.

Placement

A cannula under the eyes, where a blunt tip markedly reduces vascular risk, and a fine needle across the scalp in a grid. Precise placement matters here as much as with any injectable.

Sustained release, then regeneration

Growth factors release from the scaffold over seven to ten days, recruiting fibroblasts and improving microcirculation. New collagen builds over the following weeks, so results appear at four to eight weeks rather than immediately.

and what to expect

Under-eye PRF swells more in the first few days than hyaluronic acid filler does, and the swelling feels firm rather than soft. Many patients describe it as a small pad under each eye. It peaks at 24 to 72 hours and settles by day four to seven. This is the fibrin matrix in place before your tissue absorbs it, a normal part of how PRF works. It helps to plan around it: treat on a Thursday, allow three weeks before anything photographed, and expect no visible change for the first month.

Choosing between PRF
and filler

Hyaluronic acid filler under the eyes can be dissolved within days if you'd like it adjusted. PRF can't be, because it is your own tissue and there is no hyaluronidase equivalent. That is worth weighing, and it brings advantages too: PRF carries no risk of the blue-gray Tyndall tint that superficial filler can cause here, no risk of the water-attracting puffiness tear trough filler sometimes develops, and no allergy risk at all. Because it can't be reversed, we treat conservatively and build gently across sessions rather than aiming for everything at once.

PRF improves the blood supply to the follicle and extends its growth phase, which is especially helpful where hair is miniaturizing, becoming finer, shorter and lighter. Where a follicle has been lost entirely, there is nothing left to stimulate, so timing is the most important factor in your result. Patients who begin at the first sign of thinning see considerably better results than those who wait years. At your consultation we'll assess your scalp carefully, and if medical therapy or a surgical referral would serve you better, we'll guide you there.

PRP and PRF are often mentioned together, and they are two distinct treatments. Finding the right under-eye treatment

For under-eyes, the choice is usually between PRF and hyaluronic acid filler, and it comes down to one question: is your hollowing about volume or about skin quality? Filler restores volume immediately and can be dissolved. PRF improves skin thickness and circulation gradually and cannot be dissolved. I had been researching different options to treat under the eye for some hollowness and to refresh the skin in that area. I discovered that Katie offers PRF for under the eyes. I wanted a treatment that wasn't so aggressive or harsh. For me this was the best option. After discussing what to expect She drew my blood and numbed the area under my eyes. Then it was time for my platelets to be injected. It wasn't terribly uncomfortable but I did feel it slightly. My entire appointment was less than an hour long. It's only been about 4 hours since the injections and the swelling is visible but manageable. I have been applying arnica and its helped. I am in it for the long haul and don't expect the full results until months down the road after I've had at least 3 treatments. How to prepare & what to expect in the first week

Hydration makes a real difference

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of your visit. It makes the draw easier and improves your PRF yield.
  • Enjoy a proper meal beforehand. A blood draw and injections on an empty stomach are the most common reason patients feel faint.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and caffeine on the morning of treatment.
  • Let us know about any blood thinners, platelet disorders, anemia or recent illness, as these can affect both the draw and your result.
  • If treating under the eyes, allow at least three weeks before any event. Firm swelling lasts two to four days.
  • Reschedule if you have an active infection or are unwell.
  • Let us know if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. We don't perform PRF during this time and will happily plan your treatment for later.

What is PRF?

How many PRF sessions will I need?

Two to three for under-eyes and facial skin quality, three to four for hair, spaced four to six weeks apart. Maintenance is usually annual for the face and every four to six months for hair.

When will I see results from PRF?

First changes appear around four weeks, with the full result at eight to twelve weeks after your final session. PRF is regenerative rather than volumizing, so nothing is visible on the day.

What is the difference between PRF and PRP for the face?

Is PRF safe?

PRF is among the safest injectables available, because it contains only your own blood: no synthetic material, no additives and no allergy risk. The usual injection considerations of bruising, swelling and a small risk of infection still apply.

Who should not have PRF?

PRF isn't recommended for anyone with a platelet or bleeding disorder, anyone taking anticoagulants without physician clearance, anyone with an active infection, certain blood-borne conditions or active cancers, or anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. We review your health history carefully at your consultation.
