What each one actually is
These are not two versions of the same treatment. They work in opposite ways, and that is the whole reason to understand the difference before booking either one.
A lip flip uses a small amount of neuromodulator, placed at the edge of the upper lip. It relaxes the muscle that curls the lip inward, so the upper lip rolls slightly outward and shows more of the pink. No volume is added at all – the lip is not bigger, it just shows more of itself.
A lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel injected directly into the lip tissue. It physically adds volume, which is why it can reshape the border, balance the upper and lower lip, or add fullness that was not there to begin with.
A flip changes how much lip you can see. Filler changes how much lip there is.

The short duration of a lip flip is not a downside for everyone. Some people treat it as a way to test whether they like more upper lip show before spending more on filler.
Downtime and what to expect
Both are quick, in-office treatments with no real downtime, but the days after look different.
- Lip flip: minimal swelling, similar to a small Botox treatment anywhere else on the face. Full effect takes 3 to 7 days to show, same as Botox elsewhere.
- Lip filler: noticeable swelling for the first 2 to 3 days, often larger than the final result will be. Bruising is more common than with a flip, simply because more volume of product is placed. Final shape is visible at 2 weeks.

One thing worth knowing: a lip flip slightly changes how the upper lip moves, which can briefly affect precise lip control – whistling, playing a wind instrument, or very deliberate lip shapes when speaking. It is subtle and temporary, but worth mentioning if any of those apply to you.
Can you get both?
Yes, and it is a common combination. A flip changes how much lip shows; filler changes how much lip there is. Used together, a smaller amount of filler than usual is often enough, because the flip is already doing some of the visual work. This is a conversation to have with your injector rather than something to decide from a chart – it depends on your specific lip shape and what you are trying to change.
Myths worth dropping
- “A lip flip is just a smaller, cheaper version of filler.”
- They do different things. A flip cannot add volume, and filler cannot roll the lip outward the way a flip does. Neither is a smaller version of the other.
- “If I get a lip flip, I won’t be able to smile properly.”
- Done with a conservative dose in the right spot, a flip should not restrict your smile. This is a dosing and placement issue, not a property of the treatment itself.
- “Filler always looks overdone.”
- An overfilled look is a result of the amount and placement chosen, not something filler does by default. A single syringe placed with attention to your natural lip shape looks very different from several syringes placed without one.
